What is the risk of recidivism for online sex crimes?

The Office of Justice Programs conducted a macro-study of several initial studies to delve into rates of recidivism for online sex offenses. The researchers found that rates of recidivism for online sex offenses appear primarily to follow recidivism rates for other sex crimes. But, it is important to note that these are initial studies and more comprehensive studies are necessary.

The study noted that the factors that impact recidivism for online sex crimes is similar to those that affect other sexual offenses. For example, the age the person was at the time of the first offense, their criminal history and failure to comply with conditional release instructions all affect the rate of recidivism.

While investigating, the researchers also noted five other significant factors:

  • The presence of prior sex offender treatment.
  • Possessing of non-Internet child pornography.
  • Education.
  • Relationship status, specifically being single.
  • Not possessing depictions of adolescent minors.

The researchers noted that since the factors are primarily the same, online sex offenders can receive clinical treatment as other sex crime offenders.

You may not understand that online actions are crimes because no one is injured. However, the government takes online solicitation and child pornography offenses seriously. If you are arrested or charged with one of these crimes, you may want to consult with a defense attorney. These crimes are poorly understood and not properly appreciated; a lawyer can guide you through the legal process and help you mount a vigorous defense. Online crimes are still crimes under the eyes of the police and prosecutors; don't risk your freedom by taking these charges lightly.
