Fifteen-year-old charged as adult in Chicago shooting

Weapons charges are among the most serious counts a person can face in Illinois. Without a strong criminal defense, charges for the illegal possession or use of a firearm can lead to conviction that alters the landscape of a person’s future. Weapons crimes can result in a long prison sentence and compromise opportunities to enjoy a normal life upon release. These charges can be especially detrimental to minors, who may be charged as an adult and have their future taken from them before they turn 18.

In Chicago, a 15-year-old is in police custody after allegedly opening fire on another boy. The Police say the 15-year-old, along with two others, approached a 14-year-old and shot him multiple times. The injured boy was taken to the University of Chicago Comer Children’s hospital for treatment for gunshot wounds to his legs and arm. Police say the boy was in stable condition the day after the shooting. The incident occurred in the West Pullman neighborhood located on the city’s Far South Side.

The alleged shooter is now facing multiple criminal charges for the role police say he played in the attack. These include two felony charges, one for attempted first-degree murder and the other for aggravated battery with discharge of a firearm. The boy is being charged as an adult in the case.

If convicted, the teen’s life could be drastically altered. In addition to a lengthy prison term, the felonies on his record would make it difficult for him to find work and housing in his adult life. Those who find themselves facing felony gun charges need to understand their rights and the options available to them. Making informed decisions while navigating the Illinois justice system can help suspects keep their lives on track.
