Man facing drug charges sentenced to two years probation

Anyone who is in the throes of a drug addiction understands that a life dedicated to feeding a habit is both difficult and dangerous. A physical dependence can drive a person to behave in ways that are counter to his or her own best interests. And far too often, a practicing drug user risks experiencing an overdose, being arrested or being harmed when engaged in a drug deal. Yet life does not have to be this way and it is very possible for an addict to find a way to turn his or her life around.

A man from Merrillville who was facing 20 to 50 years in prison for cocaine distribution was sentenced last week to only two years on probation for possession. The man was arrested after he was pulled over for making an unsafe turn. The police officer had a K-9 unit that indicated there were drugs in the car. A subsequent search revealed 6.2 grams of cocaine.

The man enrolled himself in an intensive five month in-patient program to get sober. He then followed that up with six more months of sober living. The judge took his efforts to get clean and his addiction into account when it gave him such a light sentence.

If you are facing drug charges then you may want to speak to an attorney. Getting a sentence as extraordinarily light as the one enjoyed by this particular individual is rare however possible. An attorney can review the facts of your case and advise you on defense strategy. An attorney is the one person who will always be on your side and someone that the prosecutor cannot compel to testify against you. You don’t have to do it alone, an attorney can help.
