A woman in Illinois has been accused of causing a serious injury accident that impacted her son due to drinking and driving. According to authorities, the 31-year-old woman drove while intoxicated and without a driver’s license on a recent Sunday. Her son, 6, ended up suffering injuries and was in critical condition following the alleged DUI crash.
According to authorities, the collision occurred after the woman, her son, two teenagers, and her sister, 21, left a party. Police said the woman told them that she lost control while behind the wheel near Interstate 88. The car ended up spinning around and landing in a retention pond.
Police said that everyone was able to get out of the motor vehicle except for the 6-year-old boy. However, emergency responders were able to find the motor vehicle and the boy. He was then quickly taken to a medical center.
The woman who faces a DUI charge in Illinois may choose to fight the charge at trial, where prosecutors have the burden of proving the charge beyond a reasonable doubt before any conviction can happen. However, if the weight of the evidence that prosecutors plan to furnish to support the charge seems heavy, then the woman may decide to instead seek a plea agreement with prosecutors. A plea deal might offer the benefit of a lighter charge and thus a more lenient sentence than what she would receive at trial following a guilty verdict. In either scenario, an attorney will fight to make sure that the client’s rights are protected and that her best interests are upheld during every stage of the criminal proceedings.
