Survey results of Illinois DUI arrests released

In the United States, driving under the influence of alcohol is a very serious charge. A DUI charge can drastically affect a person's life and have permanent implications. Those hit with a DUI charge face jail time and steep penalties. Police departments across the state of Illinois have ramped up efforts to combat drunk driving in recent years.

The Alliance Against Intoxicated Motorists (AAIM) conducted a survey of DUI arrests across the state of Illinois during the past year, and the results were recently released. With nearly 700 police departments participating, the purpose of the survey is to provide education, awareness and recognition to police departments that are the most productive. The Rockford Police Department ranked first in the state in DUI arrest with almost 500 for 2017.

The biggest increase in arrests was seen in Gurnee, where DUI arrests were up almost 41% in the past year. However, more DUI arrests for a department does not necessarily mean there are more drunk drivers in those communities. In Chicago, DUI arrests were down almost 24% in 2017 compared to the year before.

When police suspect a driver of being under the influence of alcohol, they will often perform a series of tests on the suspect to determine if he or she is legally ok to drive. The two tests used most often are breath tests and field sobriety tests. Unfortunately, false readings on any of these tests could mean an arrest and a DUI charge. Those in Illinois who have been charged with DUI could benefit by consulting an experienced legal representative. An attorney experienced with DUI cases can determine the best course of action while ensuring the protection of individual rights.
